Inside Out: Beating the Ostomy Taboo through Social Networking

Posted on: September 3, 2011

For some reason, ostomy is still a topic that stops a conversation mid-stream even in this day and age where anybody can say anything about everything. Yes, the topic of ostomy is still very much taboo, and could probably be up there with impotence and hemorrhoids.

In order to break the stigma surrounding ostomy, it needs to be brought out in the open, free of judgment. It needs to be more in the mainstream, and should not be a topic that is skirted around, especially by those who are living with the condition. The problem is that some ostomates are afraid to open up about their situation, thus feeding the cycle.

These days, there is no better way to bring something into the mainstream than through social networking. The chief purposes behind social networking are sharing, connecting and keeping abreast on your friends' situations. What better way to ‘out' ostomy that through this platform? And this is where a pair of sources come in: Ostomates Family and Stoma Bags.  Ostomates Family offers two ways to participate. One is through the just launched www.OstomatesFamily.com , a social site that should bring about strong connections among ostomates. The effort is new. So if you like to partake in seeding, nurturing, and harvesting something beautiful, this is your chance. All you need to do is go to the site and register for free. Another option, if you rather jump onto something already on the go, is searching for Ostomates Family in Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/ostomatesfamily ). Once there, just click the like "button". There is already an active audience where you may share experiences, seek support, or ask questions.

Stoma Bags is a slightly larger Facebook based community. It is a lively and friendly group. To access it you may either go to www.StomaBags.com and click on the "Follow us on Facebook" button, or you may search directly for Stoma Bags in Facebook. Once there, you need to request Stoma Bags as a "friend". You will receive your friend confirmation shortly after.

With these sources, ostomates can now break the stigma by connecting with fellow ostomates. They can to talk about anything related to ostomy under the sun, or about whatever else they wish. Friends and family are also welcome to sign up, giving them access to information that their loved one might have been too shy to discuss. Knowing about the lives and actual experiences ostomates go through can open the channels for discussion. Only by talking about ostomy in the open can the mystery behind ostomy be dispelled. Ostomy is a fact of life, and knowing that there are so many other people out there who are living with a stoma—living a full and socially active life—can help all those who want to break out of the mold.

If you are an ostomate, a support community where you can have a normal conversation about ostomy can be a good practice ground before discussing your situation with people in the outside world. Get the opportunity to connect with fellow ostomates, get to see helpful videos, find ostomy supplies and even find recipes suited for you all in one place. Live a fuller and healthier life with a great community support system.
